The instant two people decide to marry is probably the most intimate and important moment of their lives, as two people become one forever. As a gift of love, diamonds evoke the romance and magic of traditions that have spanned the centuries.

History and Tradition

The tradition of giving a diamond engagement ring as a promise for marriage began in 1477 with the betrothal of Archduke Maximillian of Austria and Mary of Burgundy. At that time, diamonds were looked upon as talismans, or charms, that could enhance the love of a husband for his wife. Even Cupid’s arrows were said to have been tipped with diamonds, which had a magic that nothing else could equal. From that time, the royal tradition of giving a diamond engagement ring began to be embraced by people around the world, eventually becoming as much of a milestone in one’s life as the engagement itself.

When diamonds first began to be given as engagement rings, settings were elaborate and did not necessarily show the diamond in its best light. It wasn’t until the discovery of diamond mines on the African continent in 1800s that diamonds became accessible to a wider public, increasing demand and influencing design.

Wearing a diamond ring on the third finger of the left hand dates back to Ancient Egypt where it was believed that the vena amoris (the vein of love) ran from that finger directly to the heart. Wearing the ring on the third finger has since become customary in all English speaking countries.

How Much Should You Spend on a Diamond Engagement Ring?

Diamonds can be found in a wide range of prices and you are certain to find one that suits your taste and what you plan to spend. If you are about to buy a diamond engagement ring you may want to consider spending the commonly accepted guideline of two month’s salary.

Planning a wedding can be an expensive time, but remember that costly receptions and honeymoons quickly become a memory, and fairytale wedding dresses will be worn once and then quickly fade. However, a diamond engagement ring will be with you forever and will be a constant sparkling reflection of your love for each other.

We Are Here To Help

At Lawrence Sanders our aim is to make the choice of a ring as enjoyable, satisfying and rewarding as possible. Our experienced and qualified staff are here to help and guide you, answer your questions and provide you with a range of individual stones and designs, so that you come away with a ring that you truly adore. It could be a solitaire, or multi-stone ring, 18-carat white or yellow gold, platinum, or combination of metals. You may prefer a round or fancy cut diamond. Perhaps you would prefer a natural fancy coloured diamond, such as a pink diamond from Australia’s own Argyle Mine, rather than a white diamond, or a combination of the two.

Whichever it is, feel free to discuss your ‘dream engagement ring’ with our staff so that we can find the ring that best suits you, or allow us to work with you to design a completely new ring, something as unique and special as your love for each other.
